We understand that the transition to University can be a challenging time for not only for new students but also for those who support them. We also appreciate that many students rely on your help and can feel lost and confused as to where to get help once they are away from home. The following tips are designed to help you guide and support where necessary, whilst still allowing the student to become an independent adult.
Information for Parents
Useful things to know...
MyUniHub
MyUniHub was created to help students navigate their way through University so please encourage the student to contact MyUniHub –with any queries they have. We can help with most things or signpost to the most relevant person or service.
Data Protection
Did you know that the University is required to adhere to GDPR guidelines on what information we can give you? It's not that we don't want to talk to you, but legally we need the written consent of the student before being allowed to discuss any personal information relating to their studies or their wellbeing.
We will happily talk to you about any general queries, but we can't go into specific details unless there are exceptional circumstances preventing the student from contacting us or we have their prior permission to do so. The exception to this is any student who is under the age of 18 but we would still only be able to talk to a nominated contact person. For more information please visit our data protection page.
Proof of Enrolment
If you need a letter as proof of enrolment for a student please ask the student to contact MyUniHub and ask for a proof of enrolment statement. Again, due to data protection regulations we are unable to provide this information directly to you so will need the student to request this themselves from MyUniHub.
What to do if you are concerned about a students’ wellbeing or welfare
If you are concerned because you have not been able to contact the student, and you are worried about their wellbeing, you can make contact with MyUniHub. We will not be able to confirm whether someone is a student at Swansea but we will take the details, and ask Welfare@CampusLife to contact them on your behalf to let them know that you have contacted us, and ask them to make contact with you. The onus will be on the student to contact parents, and staff will not generally get back in touch with parents direct. However, if you are extremely worried or concerned about a student or feel that they are at risk then you should call 999.
Finance and Fees
We understand that often someone other than the student is responsible for paying fees. However, the contact is with the student and the same data protection rules apply as above. However, you can access general information on fees and funding here.
Students with a disability or who require special provisions for examinations
Students with a disability are advised to contact the Disability Office to ensure that any provisions they need during their time at University are put in place. Some students will have previously had provisions put in place for them for examinations during previous study, but these provisions do not automatically transfer on to the University. Therefore all students who require any support should refer to the Disability Office guidance which can be found here.
Progress/Results
Again due to data protection we are unable to release any results or discuss any progress issues with you, without the prior consent of the student.
