There are loads of ways to meet new people at Swansea University. From joining societies and sports clubs, all the way to volunteering with local charities! Creating a support network is a great way to improve your mental health and wellbeing.
Here are some ways you can do just that:
Join a society and meet new people
A great way to make new friends and meet likeminded people is by joining a society. Your Students’ Union look after over 150 societies, from Anime to Darts, and from Quidditch to Photography.
There really is something for everyone. Check out the full list of societies.
Volunteer with Discovery!
Here at Swansea University, we have our very own student volunteering charity. Set up by students over 50 years ago, it is still run for and by students with the support of a small, dedicated staff team.
You can volunteer on a huge range of projects including opportunities with children, older people, disabled adults, and environmental projects. Discovery also has a range of leadership opportunities.
Volunteering has huge positive effects on your mental health, so get involved! You can commit to a project that runs weekly, fortnightly or monthly or just come along to one off sessions whenever you feel like it. Discovery has a full training programme and a supportive induction process to make sure you are comfortable and confident with whatever you chose to do.
Volunteering is a brilliant way to get to know the community of Swansea, make a positive difference and meet new people, especially other student volunteers. All whilst building your skills and having amazing experiences to add to your CV.
Here’s what one of our fantastic Project Coordinators had to say:
‘’Volunteering with Discovery was the best thing I did in Uni, made such a difference to my confidence and I made so many friends. It also helped to secure my first job out of Uni. Discovery created a second family and introduced me to a wide range of people who are now some of my closest friends. The lessons I’ve learnt from being a part of Discovery have improved my well-being, increased my employability and helped me identify what I want to achieve in both my personal and professional life.’’
