Need to repeat or transfer

If you are needing to repeat or transfer from an undergraduate course, you will find all the information you need in the drop-downs below. Please ensure you read ALL the headings - we have split them into bite-size chunks, but each one is relevant.

Your funding could be affected if you repeat or transfer.

Please note that this information is correct for non-NHS funded students. If you are funded by the NHS bursary for your degree it is important that you check your eligibility for funding before changing your enrolment status. Transfer

If you are unhappy on your current course you may be thinking of transferring to a different course at Swansea University, or transferring to a course at another institution. You will need to get the permission of your current department as well as the department you want to transfer to before you can do this.

Transferring course can cause issues with your student funding particularly if the lengths of the courses are different (e.g. one involves a foundation year or year abroad.) If you have previously self-funded a year of study it is also imperative that you seek further advice.

Repeating modules

If you need to repeat failed modules over the course of an additional year of study, full maintenance funding may still be available. Either way, this year will be classed as a full year of funding.

Your tuition fees will be calculated pro-rata depending on the number of credits you need to repeat.

The +1 Rule

All eligible students are entitled to tuition fee and maintenance funding for the length of their course, +1 extra year. You can use this additional year of funding if you suspend part way through the academic year or if you have to repeat a year of your course.

E.g. 3 year course + 1 extra year = 4 years of funding

The number of years taken into account by your funding provider is based on your enrolment at University, not whether you have completed a full year of study or taken out student finance e.g. being enrolled for a few weeks will count as one full year of previous study.

Typically, maintenance loans are unaffected by previous years of study.

If you do not have enough funding entitlement to cover the full duration of your course you will be required to self-fund your tuition fees*. (This will apply in the earlier years of your course as your funding entitlement will be applied to the last year of your new course and worked backwards.)

*If you are a Welsh-Domiciled student in receipt of a Tuition Fee Grant, you would still be required to self-fund the full Tuition Fee amount, as both Tuition Fee Loans and Grants are affected by previous years of study.

*EU students can also apply for additional years of funding based on compelling personal reasons (CPR) if applicable.

Compelling Personal Reasons

If you feel that something out of your control had a significantly detrimental effect on your academic performance or ability to study and you had to suspend studies or repeat the year, you are able to apply for additional funding on the grounds of CPR.

CPR can include health-related issues, disability, family problems or bereavement but this list is not exhaustive.

Case Studies

CASE STUDY 1

Chloe needs to repeat modules from year 1 of her three year course.

PREVIOUS STUDY - Chloe has no previous study at HE level.

Repeating modules will still be classed as a full year of study. This will utilise Chloe's plus one year of funding. Chloe will therefore have funding secured for the rest of her course but not for any further repeats, unless there are grounds for copelling personal reasons.

CASE STUDY 2

Rachel is currently in the second year of a four year course but will be transferring to year one of a new three year course at a new establishment the following academic year.

PREVIOUS STUDY - Rachel will be classed as having two years previous study for her first course. Rachel's new course will mean she is entitled to four years funding (length of course 3 years + 1 extra year = 4 years of funding entitlement). However, due to previous study, Rachel will only receive two years' funding for the new course (4 years funding entitlement - 2 years previous study = 2 years funding). These two years will be allocated to the later part of the course, meaning that Rachel will only be entitled to a Maintenance Loan for the first year of the new course.

CASE STUDY 3

Josh is currently in year two of studying 3 year BEng course and will be transferring to a four year MEng course in the new academic year.

PREVIOUS STUDY - Josh has no previous study at HE level. Josh will be progressing and directly from year 2 to year 3 with no previous repeats/transfers or suspensions so his funding will be unaffected - he will receive funding for th remainder of his course and also have access to a plus 1 year of funding, if needed.
