Welcome to the PG Certificate Blood Transfusion Components and thank you for choosing to undertake your studies with us at Swansea University and we look forward to working with you over this academic year.
My name is Sara Morris and I am Programme Director. I support the clinical teaching team who are clinical experts in the field of Haematology and Blood Transfusion. We all facilitate your preparation to meet a new scope of practice in blood and blood product authorisation. The programme equips you with the advanced knowledge and clinical decision-making skills required of advancing roles within your scope of professional practice.
The Study days are on a Thursday and run from 09:00 - 16:00 and are currently scheduled to be held on Swansea University Singleton Campus in the Vivian Tower in room Vivian 223.
Please double check the dates below as these are now the confirmed study days which are face to face:
13/10/22, 27/10/22, 10/11/22, 24/11/22, 08/12/22, 22/12/22, 19/01/23, 02/02/23 (exam), 16/02/23, 09/03/23 & 30/03/23.
Full attendance is anticipated so please ensure you have negotiated study leave for these dates. Students have work to undertake between these dates and up to the end of April so please discuss additional support for study with your manager.
You will also need to a medical mentor for the duration of the programme. A medical mentor must be a registered practitioner who:
- has normally had at least three years clinical responsibility for a group of patients / clients in the relevant field of practice that includes authorisation of blood transfusion
- is a specialist registrar, clinical assistant or a consultant within the same clinical specialty as the HCP in a NHS Local Health Board or other NHS employer
- has the support of the employing organisation to act as the medical mentor who will provide supervision, support and opportunities to develop competence in authorisation of blood transfusion practice
- has experience or training in teaching, assessments and/or supervising in practice
- normally works with the HCP
You will work with the medical mentor to demonstrate your clinical competence. If you want to secure an appropriate mentor before your start the programme that is great. At the commencement of your studies, we will provide written guidance for them, and all MMs are offered support and training from the academic team for their mentorship role.
You will be asked to devise two learning outcomes to achieve that relate to your development and your clinical role. You may want to consider areas or interest before you start, and we can support the development of the outcomes as you progress through the first few months of study.
Please get in touch with me for any course queries and the student experience team can support you with more general admission and enrolment queries - studentsupport-medicinehealthlifescience@swansea.ac.uk
We suggest that you use a text that you are comfortable with to support your learning about the science of Coagulation, Haemopoiesis and Anaemia
With very best wishes
