The journey through university life can be both an exciting and confusing time for many students. It can be particularly challenging for those who are autistic.

Our Wellbeing and Disability Service has a dedicated team of autism practitioners who are responsible for coordinating support for autistic students. Whether you have a diagnosis or not, there is support available to help you get the most out of your studies.

I have a diagnosis of autism. How can you support me?

If you are a student with an autism diagnosis, we can:

  • Help you with the transition to university.
  • Provide opportunities for you to socialise and meet other autistic students.
  • Help you to navigate the university environment.
  • Work with academic departments to arrange reasonable adjustments (for example, extra time in exams).
  • Help you to understand your autism diagnosis.
  • Support you to develop strategies for managing difficulties linked to autism.
  • Organise for you to receive peer support if appropriate. For example, with Discovery Orientation Buddies.
  • Advise and guide you through the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) process.

I think I might be autistic but don’t have a diagnosis. Can you help?

If you are a student who is considering seeking a diagnosis of autism, there is advice and support available. We can:

  • Provide you with individual support sessions to discuss and develop your understanding of autism.
  • Discuss the potential benefits of obtaining a diagnosis with you.
  • Explore what forms of support may already be available to you.
  • Invite you to workshops and support groups where you can learn about referral options and meet other students with similar experiences.
  • Offer screening and onward referral for assessment where appropriate.

I’m a prospective student. What support is there for me?
