Campus Works

We work closely with our contractors, suppliers and other partners to minimise the impact of any essential campus works and other disruptions to services and campus facilities, including bus travel* and car parking. This includes scheduling noisy works out of hours wherever possible.

We aim to keep you informed about any disruption to life on campus. Below you will find updates about unplanned disruptions, as well as planned and ongoing activity on campus.

Notifications of Planned activity

Refurbishment of Purnell Lecture Theatre and Installation of new LED AV Screen

Project Overview

As part of our planned programme of campus improvements, we are updating the finishes in Purnell Lecture Theatre and upgrading the AV to a new format LED screen.

Project Impacts

Teaching has been relocated for the duration of the works. Contractor will be setting up a site compound on in the car park adjacent to Glyndwr Building.

Refurbishment of Grove Lecture Theatre and Grove 330

Project Overview

We are carrying out works in the Grove Building to update and upgrade the accessibility in Grove Lecture Theatre and Grove 330, and to refresh and enhance the interior aesthetics.

Project Impacts

We expect minimal disruption to campus life. Lectures are being relocated to alternative rooms. The contractor will set up their site compound in the car parking area alongside Glyndwr Building.

Library Foyer and Student Kitchen

Project Overview

As part of our ongoing campus improvement programme, works have commenced to enhance the Library entrance foyer and create a new student kitchen and breakout facility within the current Library reception area.

Project Impacts

Construction activity will be taking place within the Library entrance area. Some local disruptions and temporary changes to access routes may be required during the works.

Works are currently underway and are scheduled for completion in September.

Fire Service - Mass decontamination training exercise

Overview

Swansea University and UPP will be working with Mid & West Wales Fire Service to support in delivering a mass decontamination training exercise at Bay Campus on 30 September from approximately 12:00. The exercise will simulate their response to a large-scale chemical incident where those affected may require cleaning and decontamination. The exercise offers an opportunity to strengthen relationships with local responders and improve preparedness for hazardous material incidents.

Impact

The exercise will take place within the residential accommodation courtyards on Bay campus, with minimal impact on wider campus facilities. You may see an increased presence of fire service vehicles and specialist equipment during the day, in and around the residential accommodation. There will be an increase in pedestrian traffic between two courtyard areas and the university Sports Hall while the exercise takes place.

Conservation Works – Singleton Campus

Project Overview

Ongoing conservation works are taking place in the Abbey (room, stair and roof refurbishments) and the 1937 Library (WC refurbishment).

Project Impacts

Minimal impact expected, but there may be some minor disruption from the ongoing works.

James Callaghan Building – Roof Works

Project Overview

Roof repairs are currently in progress within the James Callaghan Building and are due to complete soon (weather dependent).

Ongoing with expectation of completion by end of June 2026.

Faraday Lecture Block – Planned Improvement and Decarbonisation Works

Project Overview

Work will commence in May (5th) within the Faraday Lecture Block on Singleton Campus to replace the heating and ventilation systems within the building. More information can be read here.

Project Impacts

The lecture block as a whole will be closed for the duration of the works. Access routes through to Faraday Tower and the Talbot Building will be maintained throughout. A site compound will be established within the NRW car park – the car park will be closed for the duration of the project.

There will be periods of localised disruption with some demolition and plant removal.

The site compound and fencing are in place, and works are progressing well.

Flood Alleviation Scheme

Project Overview

Neath Port Talbot Council is currently undertaking works to reroute the east outfall into the west outfall at Bay Campus.

Excavation works will begin behind the Great Hall and extend approximately 300 metres through the sand dunes to the SSSI. The works will involve the installation of a new drainage route connecting the two outfalls.

Project Impacts

The works will affect areas surrounding the Great Hall, the sand dunes, and sections of the beach.

Excavation activities may generate noise, particularly during the initial stages of the project near the Great Hall. Noise levels are expected to reduce as work progresses towards the SSSI.

Heavy plant and machinery, including JCBs, dumper trucks, and other construction vehicles, will primarily access the site via the east side of the campus using Engineering East Road. Some vehicles may also be diverted around the School of Management and Great Hall buildings.

Traffic management measures will be in place throughout the duration of the project. No parking will be permitted on both sides of designated roads to allow large vehicles sufficient space to manoeuvre. Disabled parking bays will remain accessible.

Staff, students, and visitors should be aware of the main plant entrance located on the east side of the campus near the SSSI. Access routes to the beach will remain available and will be clearly signposted.

No parking will be permitted on the yellow line due to space required to manoeuvre heavy machinery. Disabled bays will still be accessible.

Project Timeline

Works are expected to continue for approximately 12 weeks. Traffic management measures and access restrictions will remain in place for the duration of the project.

Swansea Airshow 2026

Overview

The Wales Airshow will return to the skies over Swansea Bay in 2026.

Impacts

Road Closures:

Road closures will be in effect in Swansea from Midday on Friday 24^th July until 5am on Monday 27^th July.

Access to Swansea University and Brynmill Lane will be maintained via Sketty Lane.

Bus Users:

Between Midday on Friday 5th July until the evening of Sunday 7th July, no busses will enter the University.

Whilst the stops inside Singleton Campus and Singleton Hospital will not be served, services will be accessible from the stop outside Singleton Hospital on Sketty Lane.

The Campus ANPR will be operational, and the normal tariff will apply for visitors.

SPAR is Coming to Fulton House

Project Overview

This investment into one of our key campus facilities is a joint initiative between the University and Students' Union, transforming the current Costcutter store into a brand-new SPAR, bringing an improved shopping experience to the heart of campus.

To make way for the new SPAR, the existing Costcutter store will close temporarily for refurbishment from 31/07/26. The works are expected to take around 4 weeks to complete.

Project Impacts

We're working closely with contractors to minimise disruption and ensure the new store is ready to welcome customers as soon as possible.

We’ll be setting up a temporary pop-up shop to support staff, students and visitors through the temporary closure period. Operating from the ground floor space adjacent to Costcutter on the south-west side of Fulton House, the pop-up will stock a range of popular items and essentials.

Glyndŵr Building Refurbishment

Project Overview

Refurbishment works within the Glyndŵr Building are scheduled to commence on 3 August 2026 and are expected to continue for approximately five weeks. The project will involve improvements across several areas of the building, including the lower ground floor and ground floor.

Project Impacts

Works will be undertaken in a number of locations throughout the building and may result in some temporary disruption to building users. During the early stages of the project, certain activities may generate increased noise levels, and there may be some localised restrictions around work areas to ensure safety.

Works are scheduled to commence on 3 August 2026 and are expected to continue for approximately five weeks.

Grove Building Refurbishment

Project Overview

Refurbishment works within the Grove Building will commence on 27 July 2026. The project forms part of the ongoing programme of estate enhancements.

Project Impacts

While the majority of the works will be contained within the building, there will be a period of disruption over the coming weeks. This will include some demolition activities that may generate elevated noise levels during the early stages of the project. There may also be limited external impacts associated with the established site compound and contractor operations.

Wallace Roof Works

Project Overview

As part of our planned maintenance and improvement programme, works have commenced to replace the central and western sections of the Wallace roof.

Project Impacts

Contractor activity will be present around the building during the works. Temporary access restrictions may be required to facilitate safe working practices.

Works commenced in June and are expected to continue until December, subject to weather conditions.
