MSc Psychology

Welcome to Swansea University and to the MSc in Clinical Psychology and Mental Health!   I look forward to meeting you soon.  We have a wonderful team of experts who will be teaching you about a range of topics including psychosis, psychopathy, affective disorders, trauma, eating disorders, and more.   

The course is intensive, but fun, and I’m sure you will get an enormous amount of knowledge that will help guide you on your future path.  We have a foundational module that will guide you on your path through Swansea University, taught by your two Directors, myself and Dr Luke Jefferies called Postgraduate Academic Skills and Development.  We also have resources at the university that can help with career choice, wellbeing, and provide general support.

At this stage there is nothing you need to do in preparation for the course – you will be given access to reading lists and all the course material you need once you arrive, and you will hear a great deal of information at your Induction in September,  however, if you have any questions or there is anything you need, do get in touch.

This intensive but rewarding course will introduce you to all the core areas of psychology, including biological, cognitive, developmental, and social psychology, as well as individual differences and research methods. You’ll also complete your own research project and take part in specialist masterclasses with our expert staff, gaining insights into the latest developments in psychology.

The programme provides the foundation for further training and careers in psychology, while also equipping you with a wide range of skills that are valued across many professions.

At this stage, there’s nothing you need to do in preparation – you’ll receive all the reading lists and course materials once you arrive, and your induction will cover everything you need to know.

Thank you very much for deciding to do the M.Sc. in Research Methods in Psychology course, at Swansea University, and we are delighted to welcome you.

As Course Director for this Masters course, I will be here to help you through your studies.  This M.Sc. programme offers modules that provide high-level training in key research skills, and offers exciting opportunities to learn about and conduct basic and applied research projects across a wide range of areas.

This course has substantially benefitted our previous students, and prepared them for careers involving research in basic and applied Psychology, for professional training courses in clinical, health, and educational, Psychology, as well as careers in the private sector.

We have well-established networks of support for both home and overseas students, developed from many years’ experience of hosting students from all over the world.

I’m really pleased to welcome you to Swansea and to the MSc in Forensic Psychology (Stage 1 accredited by the BPS).   We have a lot of fascinating material to cover during the year and a wide range of Swansea University based, local and national experts who will provide you with teaching sessions and workshops. 

Whilst the course is intensive, you will get a great insight into being a forensic psychologist.  As well as learning about core aspects of forensic psychology, there will be lots of opportunities for you to develop your own interests along the way.

As  student you will be given an Academic Mentor. This is a member of teaching staff in the Faculty or School who acts as your key point of contact while you are at Swansea University.

You should meet with your Academic Mentor one-to-one at least once every Semester.  You may also be invited to group meetings or workshops with your Academic Mentor

Your Academic Mentor will guide and support you with your academic, professional and personal development.  They can help you with:

• Reviewing your academic progress
• Accessing academic and personal support e.g. with welfare issues
• Understanding the exam and assessment system
• Academic references for placements / job applications
• Answering any other questions you may have or recommend where to best seek advice

Mentors may also have ‘office hours’ when you can see them as well.  You can email your Academic Mentor if there is something you want to discuss and/or to arrange a meeting.

As well as subject specific support by college teaching staff and your personal academic mentor, the Centre for Academic Success provides courses, workshops and one-to-one support in areas such as:

• Academic writing
• Maths and statistics
• Critical thinking
• Time management
• Digital skills
• Presentation skills
• Note taking
• Revision, memory and exam techniques
• English language skills (if English is not your first language).

In addition, if you have a Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD), disability, mental health or medical condition, the Centre for Academic Success have Specialist Tutors to support your learning, working alongside the Disability Office and Wellbeing Service to support all your needs and requirements whilst studying atSwansea University.

The Psychology society society is now back up and running after being put on hold during Covid.  

The society hosts regular socials, ranging from nights out and non-drinking socials in and around Swansea to trips in the local area & further afield!

They offer the opportunity for you to get the most of your uni experience by offering the chance to get to know your course mates and meet true friends while at uni. It is always important to have a good balance between work & pleasure, hence why we run the regular socials, as well as trips & days out in & around Swansea!

Uni is for making friends and having fun, as well as studying – get the right balance, the psychology balance.
