My doctoral research is about making sure the “invisible brain” controlling trains can be trusted. Right now, we often test software by trying a few scenarios, but that does not cover every possible situation, and testing can be slow, expensive, and prone to human error. Instead, I use mathematical techniques to check the software itself, analysing its logic to find hidden errors before they cause problems. I also go beyond safety, ensuring the software actually does its job effectively. My goal is to create smarter ways to measure software quality, so trains and similar systems are safe, reliable, efficient, and truly fit for purpose.
